The definition of kindness is "1. the quality of being warm-hearted and considerate."
I reflect on this definition often. It's not complicated. In essence, it's quite simple. Kindness can be shared with strangers, and certainly with family members, friends, and colleagues, but so often it isn't. I ponder this, too. In fact, I am passionate about the latent potential of kindness. The way I see it, kindness is a common language through which all humans have the ability to connect. In my own day-to-day, I have a pet way of spreading kindness. I like to make people feel remembered. So I leave little notes in unexpected places: the bathroom mirror, a coat pocket, hidden inside a birthday gift, on an expense report, in the sugar bowl, etc. The person I leave the note for knows it was meant for him or her, and feels special. A few years ago, while visiting my grandfather, I discovered how much these gestures mean. Although I've always known that people appreciate my notes, I was truly surprised by HOW tickled he was at still discovering them a few weeks after my visit. All I can say now, is that my pet way of spreading kindness has grown into a business --acts of kindness™. Thanks to the know-how and brainpower of my two exceptional colleagues, we are using this brand to realize the potential of the word phrases that rumble and tumble in my head. I used to scribble on sticky notes. Now, the messages are on a variety of products, enabling more connections between more people. It's funny how you end up where you are. Everything imprints you. I believe we are given opportunities and challenges for a reason. I trust my gut and I listen to my heart which led me to study biology at Boston University, then to San Diego, and finally to the exciting pulse of technology and innovation in Northern California where I met my husband Carter. I enjoyed biotech automation & software sales for 5 years, then Partnership Marketing for Sunset Magazine (a Time, Inc. title) for another year. Without question, I loved sales, mostly because it afforded me the opportunity to connect with people. Those nine years-not to mention my family and friends, being a Child Advocate, and, especially, the friendship and love of my husband-laid the foundation for the entrepreneurial endeavor closest to my heart: spreading kindness. The timing is right, and the market continues to encourage acts of kindness™. I believe that kindness is contagious, and we as a planet are moving toward the ultimate tipping point: when kindness replaces fear and terror. We are approaching this goal slowly, as humanity discovers the common language of kindness, and just how good it feels. And I am excited to have created something that just might help give a little nudge in the right direction. And so it is my mission to stand behind the creation of products that bring people together, one deliberate act of kindness at a time.
